FEES FOR VITAL RECORDS: FIRST copy is $20.00.
Each additional copy of the same record (at the time of purchase) is $3.00
There are three options available to purchase a certified copy of a birth, death, marriage or domestic partnership record; IN PERSON, BY MAIL or via EXPEDITED SERVICE
IN-PERSON - All in-person requests are processed "while you wait" between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:15 p.m. We are located in Suite 220 of the Crawford County Administration Building, 225 N Beaumont Rd, Prairie du Chien, WI 53821. If it is not possible for you to order your copies in person, you may select from one of the two options below. NOTE: we can not accept any orders over the phone.
Credit/debit cards accepted for an additional fee. Applicant must show ID. At least one form of ID must show your current name and address. Expired cards or documents will not be accepted.
BY MAIL - There are no extra fees to order copies by mail. All of our correspondence is answered the same day it is received, therefore any request received today is mailed out today. If you need your copies sooner than that we suggest you select the expedited service. Note expedited option will cost you more money than sending your request by mail or by coming to our office in person.
EXPEDITED SERVICE - For your convenience, you can request certified copies of birth, death, marriage and domestic partnership certificates (with government raised seal) for you or your immediate family through our Official records Online Service

NOTE: it is illegal to make a photocopy of a certified record.
Crawford County's vital statistics are filed by the Register of Deeds to include all births, deaths, and marriages.
The Crawford County Register of Deeds Office has birth, death and marriage records for events that occurred in Crawford County. In the case of births and deaths if a Crawford County resident dies or has a child in another Wisconsin County that record will also be filed here.
All requests for copies are processed the same day they are received and are mailed to the requestor the same day or the following business day. Requestors usually receive their copies one to three days following receipt of request.
Access to the genealogy research area is on a first come, first serve basis. All researchers must complete an "Application for Records Search" and present acceptable identification prior to entering the research area.
New: effective August 1, 2009 Domestic Partnership Agreements will also be filed in the Register of Deeds Office.
Effective April 1, 2011 all United States birth certificates submitted for minor and adult passport applications must contain the name of the parent(s) in addition to all previous requirements. All United States birth certificates must meet all of the following criteria:
1. Show the full name of the parent(s).
2. Be issued by the office of vital statistics of the state, county or city where the birth occurred.
3. Show the full name of the child at birth.
4. Bear the embossed, impressed, multi-colored, or raised seal and signature of the issuing authority.
5. Indicate a registration or file date that is within one year of the birth.
6. Be an original and certified document - NOTARIZED COPIES AND PHOTO COPIES ARE NOT ACCEPTED.
