WHEN WILL I RECEIVE MY TAX BILL?
Tax bills are mailed by the local treasurer in December of each year. They usually include a letter regarding any special collection times, place, and any other information the municipality wishes to send.
WHEN ARE PAYMENTS DUE?
All taxes on real property, personal property, and improvements on leased land shall be paid in on of the following ways:
• In full on or before January 31st.
• In 2 installments, with the first installment payable on or before January 31st and the second installment payable on or before July 31st. The exception being if the tax is less than $100.00 then the full amount is due on or before January 31st.
• Personal property taxes must be paid in full by January 31st.
All payments postmarked through January 31st are made payable to the local treasurer. Payments made February 1st, including second installments and delinquent taxes are due to the Crawford County Treasurer, except for personal property.
WHERE DO I MAKE MY PAYMENT?
Real estate tax payments must be made to the local town, village of city on or before January 31st (name and address can be found in top left of the tax bill) and to the county treasurer after January 31st. Personal property tax is paid to the local treasurer.
WHAT IS THE PENALTY FOR LATE PAYMENT?
Delinquent first installment – If the first installment of taxes is not paid by January 31st, the entire amount of the taxes remaining unpaid is delinquent as of February 1st and will be charged Interest of 1% and Penalty of .5% per month until paid in full.
Delinquent second installment – If the 2nd installment of taxes is not paid in full by July 31st, the entire amount of the taxes remaining unpaid is delinquent as of August 1st. Interest will be charged at 1% and Penalty of .5% per month back to February 1st.
DO WE ACCEPT POSTMARK DATE ON A MAILED PAYMENT?
Yes we do, per Wisconsin Statute 74.69, a payment must be postmarked before midnight of the deadline date. A postage meter date, however, does not qualify as postmark date.
Note: We urge all taxpayers to mail several days early to avoid postal delay when mailing from community mailboxes. You may consider going into the post office to assure a timely postmark.
WHAT ARE MY PAYMENT OPTIONS?
The Treasurer’s office accepts tax payments via cashier’s check, money order, personal check, cash or pay on-line with a Credit Card. All payments must be made in United States Funds only.
IF MY ESCROW CHECK IS PAYABLE TO MY LOCAL TREASURER DO I HAVE TO GET A NEW CHECK?
No, we can accept the check if we are collecting the taxes. We do not accept checks payable to anyone besides the Crawford County Treasurer, local treasurer, and property owner.
MY ESCROW CHECK IS MORE THAN MY TAX BILL, WHEN WILL I GET THE OVERPAYMENT?
If the payment is for the first installment, the local treasurer is responsible for issuing you a check. If the payment is for the second installment or delinquent taxes, the County will issue a check within thirty days.
I DON’T WANT TO LOSE MY HOME BECAUSE I HAVE DELINQUENT PROPERTY TAXES. WHAT CAN I DO?
The best solution is to make an appointment to meet with the County Treasurer and draw up a formal payment arrangement agreement. As long as the agreement is kept, there would be no foreclosure.
HOW LONG CAN A PERSON BE DELINQUENT ON THEIR PROPERTY TAXES BEFORE THEY LOSE THEIR PROPERTY TO TAX FORECLOSE?
Once taxes are delinquent for two years, the County will start the foreclosure process. On September 1st of each year the County Treasurer issues Tax Certificates on all of the properties that have delinquent taxes for the current year. State law allows
a two year redemption period for the Tax Certificates. Crawford County can take Title by Tax Deed to the property any time after the two year redemption period expires.
ARE THERE ANY CREDITS ON PROPERTY TAXES AND HOW DO I GET THEM?
Yes, there are three credits, the Lottery and Gaming Credit, the 1st Dollar Credit, and the Homestead Credit.
HOW CAN I GET THE LOTTERY AND GAMING CREDIT?
• The property you pay taxes on must be your primary residence.
• It must have been your primary residence as of January 1, the year you are applying for.
• You must sign a Lottery and Gaming Certification Form.
DO I HAVE TO APPLY FOR THE LOTTERY AND GAMING CREDIT ON PROPERTY TAXES EACH YEAR?
No, you do not. Once the credit is applied to a parcel it is only removed if the residence no longer is the owner’s primary residence.
MY NAME IS ON MY PARENT’S RESIDENCE, THEY HAVE LIFE ESTATE. WILL THEY GET THE LOTTERY AND GAMING CREDIT ON THEIR PROPERTY TAXES?
Yes, just as long as the property is designated life estate.
I JUST RECEIVED MY TAX BILL AND THE LOTTERY AND GAMING CREDIT IS NOT ON IT. WHAT DO I DO?
When you pay your taxes at your municipality, point the omission out to them, and they can give you the credit right then and there. After the January 31st collection, you can contact the Crawford County Treasurer's Office and fill out a Late Claim which can be submitted to the Wisconsin Department of Revenue.
