Car Seat Program
Crawford County Public Health offers Car Seat Checks. Road injuries are the leading cause of unintentional deaths to children in the United States. When installed and used correctly child safety seats decrease the risk of fatal injury by 71% among infants, 54% among toddlers and 45% among children ages 4 - 8. Schedule an appointment with the Crawford County Child Passenger Safety Technician to learn and ensure your child's car seat is installed correctly. Car seat checks can be scheduled by calling the Health Department at (608) 326-0229 or emailing slenzendorf@crawfordcountywi.org.
Oral Health Services
Crawford County Public Health offers an Early Childhood Cavity Prevention Program to children through age six. This program includes oral health screening, education, fluoride varnish application, and referral for any necessary dental problems. Fluoride has been found to prevent or reduce cavities in primary and permanent teeth of young children. Crawford County Public Health’s Early Childhood Cavity Prevention Program targets WIC participants and Head Start.
Lead Poisoning Prevention & Testing
Testing for the presence of lead in children ages 1 and 2 continues to be done routinely at our WIC clinic sites and on a walk-in basis at the Public Health Office. This screening is done free of charge and information regarding the hazards of lead is addressed with each client.
Postpartum Visits
(Crawford County Public Health offers home visits or support through phone contacts to all postpartum mothers and babies upon referral from Boscobel, Vernon, and LaCrosse hospitals. Issues addressed during these visits and/or contacts include: normal growth and development, immunizations, feeding and nutrition, safe sleep, shaken baby syndrome, postpartum depression, well water testing, car seat safety, health insurance, day care, second hand smoke, early brain development and more.

First Breath is a program that helps pregnant women in Wisconsin quite smoking.
Health Check
The Health Check program is designed to provide preventative health counseling to children under the age of 18 enrolled in Medical Assistance (MA). A general head to toe physical assessment,hearing, vision, blood tests, dental inspection, analysis of growth and development, anticipatory guidance, immunizations if needed and nutritional counseling are all included in a Health Check. The Health Check program is federally funded under MA.
School Health
Consultation to schools throughout the county is provided. In addition, training for hearing and vision screening, educational programs on current health issues and immunizations are available.
Maternal Child Health
Services are available to schools and licensed day care sites in the county by the Public Health Nurse to promote wellness, educate children, parents and teachers on health, safety and immunizations. Hearing and vision screenings and health assessments are available for one to five year old children.

In addition to serving as an initial point of contact for WIC offices across the state, we share information with all of our callers about other resources that may be helpful to them, including Badgercare, FoodShare, W2, Childcare Subsidies and Prenatal Care Coordination.

At Wisconsin First Step our mission is to assist parents in finding resources for their children, aged birth to 21, with special needs. Not only will we help you get connected to the Birth to Three Early Intervention Program, but we can also share information about other programs that may benefit your child and family, including care coordination, therapies, respite care, autism services, behavioral health resources, transition assistance and employment services.
Vision Screening Program
The goal of the Vision Screening Program is to identify treatable or preventable causes of commonly occurring visual problems in preschool and school–age children. Early detection of eye problems, when treatment can be most effective, ensures that children’s vision is optimal for learning and in some cases can even prevent permanent loss of vision.
The vision screening is done using the Plusoptix screener which employs state of the art technology in vision screening of children. With a quick “picture” the device instantly checks for a range of vision conditions and will print a detailed screening report to aid the eye care professional in follow up examinations.
