Voter Registration
Are you a new voter? Have you recently moved and will now be voting at a new polling location? If you want to avoid in person registration, March 30 will be the last day to register to vote online (or by mail) for the Spring Election and Presidential Preference Primary on April 7th. After March 30th you will still be able to register to vote in person up until April 3rd at your local clerk’s office - Find your Municipal Clerk’s Contact Information here (see Find My Clerk under Need Assistance on the left-hand side of the page) or at your polling site on election day.
Absentee Voting
COVID-19 concerns may keep you and many other adults of all ages from going to their polling sites to vote on April 7. Governor Evers and the Wisconsin Elections Commission are encouraging all residents to vote early to minimize Election Day crowds and minimize exposure. Absentee voting is very easy in Wisconsin and is one way to ensure voters who do not wish to go to the polls on Election Day that their votes will still be counted. Any eligible Wisconsin voter can vote by absentee ballot for each election. Absentee voting can be done by mail or in-person in the clerk’s office.
If you are already registered to vote at your current address or once you have registered to vote, there are several ways you can request an absentee ballot. If you have internet access, the easiest way is to access MyVote Wisconsin: https://myvote.wi.gov/. If you prefer, you could also download the Application For Absentee Ballot (EL-121). Complete the form and mail it to your municipal clerk's office. To find your local clerk go to https://myvote.wi.gov/en-US/MyMunicipalClerk and enter in your home address. You may also contact your local clerk by phone, email or mail and request an absentee ballot to be sent to you. If you do not know who your local municipal clerk is, or where the clerk's office is located, you can find this information on the MyVote Wisconsin website (see link above) or by searching a list of all Wisconsin Municipal Clerk Contact Information.
I have an appointment with the AARP Tax Aide program at the Crawford County Administration Building. What is the status of my appointment?
AARP tax preparation assistance in Crawford Co is suspended until further notice. We will try to reschedule the existing appointments when restrictions are lifted and before the IRS Tax filing deadline. Everyone with appointments is being contacted by phone.
I have heard that I have until July 15 to file my taxes, is that true. Yes. You have to file your taxes by July 15. If you owe taxes for 2019, you have until July 15th to make your payment without any interest accruing or penalties on the late payment.
What about the Wisconsin Homestead Tax Credit? For most claimants, the deadline for filing a 2019 Schedule H or H-EZ is April 15, 2024. If you are a taxpayer with a fiscal taxable year (one ending on a date other than December 31), your deadline for filing Schedule H or H-EZ is 4 years, 3 1/2 months after the end of the fiscal taxable year to which the claim relates.
If I qualify for homestead credit for years prior to 2019, can I file a homestead credit claim for those years? Homestead credit claims for prior years can be filed up until the filing deadline for each year's claim:
Claim Year Filing deadline
2018 - April 15, 2023
2017 - April 15, 2022
2016 - April 15, 2021
2015 - April 15, 2020
Note: If any due date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, use the next business day.
The deadlines for 2014 and prior year homestead credit claims are past and claims for those years cannot be filed.
Will I qualify for unemployment benefits if the coronavirus (Covid-19) caused my employer to shut down operations? In addition, if an employer lays off employees due to the loss of production caused by the coronavirus, will the employees be eligible for unemployment insurance benefits? Wisconsin unemployment benefits are available to individuals who are unemployed through no fault of their own. If an employer must shut down operations and no work is available, individuals may be eligible for unemployment if they meet the monetary criteria and the weekly eligibility criteria. This is also the case if an employer shuts down production.
